BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE TWO RIVERS
.. That's what Overseas Filipino Workers, or OFW's, are faced with. Pardon the revised figure of speech but the promise of Mesopotamia and now Iraq, arguably once the cradle of civilization, still beckons to these workers amid the increasing violent insurgency. Where in the world can a driver get as much as $3000/month? That's a fortune in a poor country such as the Philippines. No wonder the government is caught in a Catch-22 situation. They have to appear concerned or risk the wrath of people back home. The government doesn't appear too convincing, however, and it's not surprising. The country's fortune has been carried on the backs of these workers for years now.
