picket fences
..building a fence on your backyard shouldn't be a big problem, right? wrong..not when it invades the privacy of your neighbors and restricts their access to the public domain. here are things to take note before you build that wall.

in need of miracles?
..the History channel's feature last night on the incorruptibility of the bodies of saints that have been buried for years is a fascinating issue. some quarters in the Catholic church treat it as an incontrovertible proof about the presence of miracles in our lives. do Catholics really need these issues to convince themselves of the validity of their faith? there is evidence that holy men and women outside Catholicism have also reached the state of incorruptibility and that in no way is this the monopoly of one faith. the Church is wise to downplay these events and focus on the reasonability of faith and the presence of grace in the world.

death, death go away
..George Will gives an insightful commentary about the dangerous effects of the death penalty. it has been argued again and again around the world and upheld by the United Nations Committee on Human Rights that capital punishment is not and never will be a deterrent to committing crime. a person's state of mind under stress is like a complex mix of molten lava exploding that most of the time one never realizes the full consequences of their actions until after the fact. societal expectations and community passions skew the trial in favor of the prosecution which also has all the resources available to it in prosecuting the case.

tv or no tv?
..is television good for your kids? the debate may not be resolved anytime soon. one thing, however, is sure - although technology has made education not only accessible but flexible, parents still hold the key in educating their children properly.

North Korea's sun rises
..North Korea was featured in two major publications this past week, the New York Times' magazine cover and Newsweek. are we seeing the unravelling of the U.S. government's failed policy in the Hermit Kingdom? no one really knows for sure and the mystery continues. it would be devastating to miscalculate North Korea's intentions and stick to conventional wisdom about its blackmail strategy. it might be too late before intelligence is disproved in the form of a mushroom cloud.
