BANDAFEST ROCKS!
..Last night's
"Rivalry 4 Charity" was a resounding success in terms of tickets sold and the number of people who came. As in any event there are always glitches and in this it was a major one. The set-up was a mess! The huge tables and the chairs made it difficult for people to move around and posed a security hazard in case of emergency. I'm glad there was none save for some bands that played Elvis Presley covers. I mean c'mon! It made me almost run to the nearest exit which was at that point inaccesible due to the arrangement. I survived those sets by covering my ears and wincing. Our Ateneo band,
iskul blue-kul played last and by that point the humongous crowd had dwindled to a few loyal fans and a crowd of La-Sallites staring in disbelief at the gorgeous band playing onstage. We surely rocked the house down inspite of how tired we were.
Animo Ateneo!

BACK FROM A MONTH LONG HIATUS
..I couldn't recover from the Republican convention. Who would not feel spent and disillusioned by all the empty promises proclaimed? There are so many important things to talk about but they got buried under the centrality of the issue of security. It is a given that any administration should do its best to protect the nation in the everyday. What about jobs and outsourcing? Why are people not complaining about healthcare? What about the prohibitive cost of drugs and medicine? Didn't anyone notice the poor and their increasing number? The REAL issues somehow got lost on the way to Election 2004.

I SURVIVED THE GOP CONVENTION!
..At least 800,000 New Yorkers left the city during last week's Republican convention at the Garden. It could be part paranoia with security threats and part "I dont want to hear about Republican lies" and the liars who tell them - borrowing from Franken's book. Whatever it is, it was actually good for some of us who stayed put. The buses were half empty and the trains were just surreal, like living in pre-Giuliani New York when people shunned the trains. (Just read about it. I wasn't here.) My commute to work was as pleasant as it can get. No scrambling for the next available seat and no skirmishes. I didn't hear any "excuse me!" all week. Makes you wonder what you have to put up to live here and be at the center of the universe.
Respek!
