A REASON TO CELEBRATE?
..I don't know what to make of this news. Though it is heartwarming to note that money from skilled workers abroad subsidize most of the Philippine economy, this is precisely part of the problem. It is a short-term solution that is being milked by the government without instituting real structural and long term solutions to improve the economy. It is a myth to rely solely on the services sector to keep our economy afloat. Any competitive advantage the Filipino worker has right now in terms of skill and attitude will not survive the onslaught of the sheer number of Chinese and Indian workers who will work the same jobs for less money. There are just so many of them and no less skilled as a matter of fact. The Philippine government needs to focus on education, science and technology in order to develop competitive and skilled workers who are going to adapt easily to a world constantly in flux.
