AVENUE $

.. Critically acclaimed Broadway musical and Tony winner Avenue Q dropped out of the Las Vegas School of Hard-Knocks when the Wynn Hotel announced it was ending its 4 month run. This was a big blow to the show's dream of widening its mainstream appeal. Unfortunately "What happens in Vegas, does not stay in Vegas".

NO EMAIL, NO SPAM
.. Revelations that Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and Homeland Security Chief Chertoff do not use email as part of official communications raised eyebrows in Washington last week. It was uncovered when Congressional investigators requested email and other official communications as part of the probe on the government's response to Katrina. I don't know if this is an issue for top officials of the government. The way I see it, the higher you go up in any organizational hierarchy the more bogged down you will be and there is just no time to read emails. So much for productivity. The real question should be whether the lack of official email hampered the two officials' response to the tragedy or any other critical event in the future. I suspect the answer is no. As long as they are equipped with other communications tools that are more high-tech, like satellite communications and radios etc. then that should be enough.

BONO IN RED
.. You can accuse Bono of U2 for being old but definitely not for lacking creativity. Now he teams up with American Express to launch the Amex "Red Card" which gives 1 percent of money that customers spend with the card to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Magnifico!

FULL OF BLOG
.. The earning potential of blogs may be limited to a few A-list bloggers in the so called "power-law distribution" but this critique misses the point altogether. The revolution has been televised. The ubiquity of blogs is a product of opportunity being made available to everyone. Sure we know what comes next, the capitalist knocking at the door. It is a small price to pay for making information widely available, and therefore, providing more choices to a better informed public.

NETFIX
.. So customers complain of
throttling but it turns out your friendly neighborhood postal worker has been keeping your Netflix DVD's from getting to your house! I say bring back the 37 cents stamp please.

SCIENCE AND GOD
.. A deep reading and reflection on this
article will result in the conclusion that there is no inherent conflict between Science and Faith. The seeming fundamental conflict occurs in the misformulation of the question whether the universe was created by chance or by necessity. Father Coyne answers the two are not mutually exclusive, that the ongoing evolution of the universe requires both chance and necessity (design). There is method to the madness, the seeming randomness of molecules meeting together to form matter. Faith and Science address two different concerns and must be allowed to proceed with neutral deferrence to each other. We don't need God to see the natural processes happening before our eyes much the same way that we don't need science to believe in a loving God whose mystery is constantly revealed to our understanding every day.

FUTURE OF US YOUTH
.. It's an understatement to say that young professional adults in the US right now face intense financial difficulty. There's a lot of work available but they don't pay well and the benefits are hard to come by. This is a great challenge that the government needs to address especially with the advent of outsourcing. Pretty soon even white collar jobs will go abroad and what is left will be low-paying jobs that don't provide much security much less fortune.

NETFLIX HICCUP
.. The practice of putting heavy DVD renters at the back of the line, so called "throttling", though serious will not severely affect the way Netflix does business. The business model has been proven to provide amazing value. The heavy users are only a minority and most are thankful to Netflix for changing the way we watch movies at home. It's that easy.

TROUBLE IN THE RIGHT
.. This year's Congressional elections come fall will be a watershed moment for the Republican party. Will the Conservative coalition hold up just in time for the party to maintain its dominance in both houses? Will it be the year when the party splits up over boiling issues such as immigration, stem cells and the deficit? Political pundits are salivating right now over the myriad possibilities that may happen as a result of the elections. Some Republicans are worried that many conservative voters may sit out this election in frustration of Bush's policies that have deviated from the true spirit of the Republican spirit of small government, deep values and strong on national security. A look at trouble brewing around the GOP these days.

AN IMMIGRATION ODYSSEY
.. I appreciate the author's personal journey with the failed policy of U.S. immigration as the backdrop. Anything that will further the cause of millions of undocumented people, whose only sin is trying to earn a good living, is welcome even if coming from a white guy who has it all - and then some.

END OF AN ERA
.. When was the last time you sent a telegram? You might care to be nostalgic now that it would probably be the last time you will hear of the practice. Western Union logged its last telegram transaction unheard of by most people in the 18-25 demographic. Times are a' changin.
