WHAT GIVES?
..For almost two weeks Pope John Paul has been in and out of the hospital but you wouldn't notice it if you only read the Christian Science Monitor. There is nary a single space of news devoted to the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church in the paper. Even if there is an inherent doctrinal difference between Catholicism and The First Church of Christ, Scientist, isn't it the duty of media to report the news and significant events? What happened to the publisher's motto of "to injure no man, but to bless all mankind"? Isn't the Pope a victim of selective journalism for reasons of competing interests? If the Pope dies soon (God forbid), will the paper have the decency to report it? I wonder..

THE FEMININE PARADOX
.. Who can understand the female mind? Contemplate this..

"For I am the first and the last.
I am the wife and the virgin.
I am the mother and the daughter.
I am she whose wedding is great.
And I have not taken a husband...

For I am knowledge and ignorance.
I am shame and boldness.
I am shameless; I am ashamed.
I am strength and I am fear.
I am war and peace."

THE THUNDER, PERFECT MIND
(ca 1st century A.D. Gnostic poem)

THE POD INVASION
.. Apple is not leaving anything to chance. Now they've really cornered the market by covering all the budget price points to ward off the rest of the mp3 player wannabees. I'm not buying the $349 iPod photo just yet. I'm betting there's going to be a cheaper model before the year ends. I'm crossing out number one on my xtmas list for 2005 just about umm.. right now.

SERVER'S REVENGE
..You better be kind to the waitstaff next time you eat in a restaurant if you don't want to be trashed the moment you leave behind that measly tip. Don't breathe a sigh of relief just because you are not a celebrity (or yet). These folks won't mince words - out of towners included. Shouldn't we all be leaving a more than decent tip to the people who labor to make our dining experience pleasurable? Accent on the last word, that is. Still, give them all a break.

HONEY, IM HOME(SHORING)!
..Is this just a case of trying to be politically correct? I don't think offshoring will reverse the trend of companies and businesses bringing jobs abroad to save on costs. It may keep some jobs here in the U.S. but the cost of doing business abroad will continue to go down, thus, forcing companies to outsource. This could be a ploy to give the impression that companies are responding to public backlash about jobs being taken away from the mainland.

A REASON TO CELEBRATE?
..I don't know what to make of this news. Though it is heartwarming to note that money from skilled workers abroad subsidize most of the Philippine economy, this is precisely part of the problem. It is a short-term solution that is being milked by the government without instituting real structural and long term solutions to improve the economy. It is a myth to rely solely on the services sector to keep our economy afloat. Any competitive advantage the Filipino worker has right now in terms of skill and attitude will not survive the onslaught of the sheer number of Chinese and Indian workers who will work the same jobs for less money. There are just so many of them and no less skilled as a matter of fact. The Philippine government needs to focus on education, science and technology in order to develop competitive and skilled workers who are going to adapt easily to a world constantly in flux.

A LENTEN TUTORIAL

FOOD YOU SHOULD EAT
..I'm quite jubilant about this report. It gives me more reason to eat my favorite salmon steak teriyaki straight from chef nobi's kitchen. Hey, it's the best kept secret in Forest Hills where I work. Where can you get fresh marinated salmon over rice with a sumptuous salad in a swank neighborhood for $6.50? As Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams says it, only in New York ,kids, only in New York.

PINOY PIRATES ON BOARD
..If you saw Wes Anderson's movie Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you would have seen Filipino pirates hijacking the scientist's boat on their way to track a shark for revenge. Presumably, the pirates, though not mentioned by name could be no other than the infamous group Abu Sayyaf who kidnaps foreigners for ransom. The movie did a poor way of casting the characters playing the kidnappers, most of whom were obviously Filipino-Americans judging from the way they spoke Tagalog with an American twang. Personally, the movie was a bit of a disappointment because of its uneven plot even as it retains the characteristically off-beat humor the director is famous for in such movies as The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore.
